What they're saying: Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen‘s four-star review of the third Goon sax record at NME had this to say: “Their first record with indie giant Matador Records… marks a sharp pivot in direction. The Goon Sax has taken cues from new wave and electronica… That’s not to say that the trademark Goon Sax attitude has vanished: that same propulsive simplicity underpins many of the songs, layered as they are with new ideas.” A review from Shaad D’Souza at Pitchfork aptly describes the band’s particular brand of lyrical misanthropy: “The Goon Sax have always had the market cornered on tales of young-adult embarrassment… On Mirror II they dig deeper, cataloging embarrassment and every emotion in spitting distance: shame, disgust, malaise, anxiety, discomfort, disconnection, fear, and, above all, cringe.” Mirror II was named Stereogum’s ‘Album Of The Week’ and featured this record-nerd ready sonic comparison: “They’re like Times New Viking with the distortion turned down or the xx with the distortion turned up — a little bit Flying Nun, a little bit 4AD.”

What we say: Australian made hazy, droney, late 80's style college rock. We loved this band’s first couple of youthfully charming records, and here they retain that spark and try some new sounds.
