Staff Picks: Dummy - Mandatory Enjoyment

For fans of: Space-Age Cosmic Pop

What they're saying: Pitchfork’s Jesse Locke calls Mandatory Enjoyment “blissful and spacious” and claims the L.A. band have “transcended their influences and crafted their own record collector gem.” From Dash Lewis at Post-Trash praises the Dummy’s excellent influences and their ability to transcend them: “The members of Dummy clearly consider their songwriting as an extension of their insatiable musical curiosity, channeling it into an excellent debut album.” And this passage from Lizzie Manno at Paste Magazine nicely puts words to the groups appeal:

“Their blend of noise-pop and new age music works on multiple levels, especially because both subgenres thrive on the fascinating intermingling of electronic and organic components. But what’s arguably most satisfying about Dummy is that their thrumming instrumentals evoke crisp lines, while their free-flowing, tangential textures color outside those bounds—their songs always feel like the perfect painting.”

What we say: Dummy are carrying the flame of a few of our record-collector faves such as Broadcast or Stereolab. Hypnotic space-age psych-pop done right!
